The sailor was overwhelmed with the joy of the moment and grabbed a nurse and kissed her before they parted ways. She didn’t see it as a sexual assault, she understood that everyone was celebrating. And it certainly wasn’t simply a drunken act. Stop trying to ruin this picture. It captures the joy of the end of a really awful time.  If I’m not mistaken, these two remain friends to this day.  You aren’t mistaken, they visit each other and their families and exchange christmas cards. Wikipedia actually has a great article about the photo including a lengthy section about how the identities of the two people in the picture have never been conclusively confirmed as several people have claimed to be either party so yeah, you are mistaken. and kissing someone without their consent is sexual assault regardless of the atmosphere of celebration. OKAY GUYS so a) the identity of these two HAS been confirmed (Greta Zimmer-Friedman and George Mendosa) and b): while there is definitely a point to be made about rape culture in the perpetuation of this image as being romantic and the actual events surrounding, GRETA ZIMMERMAN HAS BEEN ASKED AT GREAT LENGTH IF SHE CONSIDERED IT ASSAULT AND HAS SAID “NO.”  “There is just no way that there was anything bad about it,” she said. “It was all good news, the best news we’d had for a number of years.” Both Mendonsa and Friedman acknowledged the kiss was a surprise but that it was not unwelcome or offensive. source! when people continually point this out as a sexual assault OVER THE VERY WORDS OF THE PERSON WHO WAS ‘ASSAULTED’ you are denying her her own experience. You are re-writing what happened to her to make her a victim despite the fact that she does not view it as such. please stop speaking over the the person this happened to. she deserves her own voice and her own words to conclusively determine what this was.
